Postavaru Night

Since the beginning of this year I wanted to participate to as many competitions as possible. Possible = without being injured or be injured. So this week-end we’ve opened up the season. I’m glad that in the mean time Rose got virus-ed some how and we’ve both participated to Postavaru Night. That was pretty much the foreplay :).

To be honest I didn’t know what to expect from this event. The distance was pretty short ~4.5 km and the height difference quite substantial ~ 700 m. But being a carpathianman event I knew it will be well organized and probably after finishing it I will feel great … and I was not wrong. The race started at 19.00 and there were 2 types of races: skiing and running. Because we don’t have the gear for skiing we’ve enrolled for the running event. At 19.00 in Poiana Brasov were -1 degrees Celsius. We knew that at the top of Postavaru the temperature will be much lower. So that raised a problem … what to wear during the race and what to put in our back-packs such that it will not be too heavy but also to have some clothes with us when finishing the race. Fortunately we’ve made the right choices and our back-packs were very light.

Coming back to the race … I was surprised by the big number of competitors at the start line. In the end we were informed that around 340 people competed in this event :).

The route was nice, the snow was even nicer and we felt sorry that we don’t have the proper equipment for skiing… maybe next year. In my back-pack I found room for my camera (which is quite big) and as we were climbing I’ve manage to take some shots.

Not knowing to well Postavaru mountain and being the first time I was competing in this event it was quite hard to estimate where we were. I had my altimeter with me and by knowing the height difference I did some calculations :), but even so it was hard to know how much we have until the finish line. But that was not actually a problem because we didn’t come for the competition, but more to do some outdoor activity under the light of our head-torches. And it was veeeery nice. The other competitors were spread around and they were making a nice light trail under the shadow of the night. However Rose did a nice job and we’ve finished together in 1 hour. Happy finishers faces 🙂

After crossing the finish line we’ve rushed to Postavaru hut because it was quite cold outside and we were a bit sweaty. Inside it was reaaaaly crowded. Probably 400 persons in such a small room. But it was a nice atmosphere, very friendly. Everybody was laughing and enjoying the time up in Postavaru. We’ve received a tasty pasta treat … yummmi… and at around 2 AM we’ve started to descend.

In 40 minutes we were back home 🙂 and slept reaaly well after this great night.
